V.A.S.E.

Visual Art Scholastic Event

About V.A.S.E.

V.A.S.E - Visual Art Scholastic Event, is an annual contest open to all students in the state of Texas. There is a regional V.A.S.E. contest and a state V.A.S.E. contest that students may advance to if their work is selected to advance during judging. While numbers vary from year to year there are generally about 25,000 entries in the regional events across the state of Texas with only about 1,800 of those student entries advancing to State V.A.S.E.

Regional V.A.S.E.

During the regional event students will travel with us to the hosting campus with their artwork and present their work to a judge who will conduct a short interview. This format provides students the opportunity to validate decisions they have made in the production of their work and gain confidence talking about themselves as artists and their artwork that that they have worked so hard to produce. Student work will receive a rating from 1 to 4 and a annotated rubric from their judge validating their score. Pieces with a 4 rating will be placed in the student gallery which can be viewed during the event. Only the artwork in the student gallery (that has received a 4 rating) will be considered by judges when selecting the work that moves on to state

State V.A.S.E

If Carver Students are selected to advance we travel by bus to the city of the hosting campus to participate in the State Event. The event consists of a full day of engaging workshops, award ceremonies, portfolio reviews by college representatives, and free time to enjoy various food trucks and view works hanging in the State Student gallery which represent the top 10% of works selected from all over Texas.

Timeline and Process

October

Students should start thinking about what piece or pieces they would like to take to V.A.S.E. this year. Students may take up to two artworks as long as they have been created after last years Regional Event (February). Students should talk to their teachers about their intention to participate and the piece or pieces they have selected.

November - December

Registration opens in November and teachers will start building their list of student works they plan on entering. Students will need to use this time to make any revisions needed or in many cases complete the work they plan on entering. Students should write an artist statement, title their work, and practice interviewing using unofficial versions of the paperwork linked above to guide their responses.

January

Teacher lists go through a series of "edit locks" meaning they will not be able to edit the number of students on their list and eventually will not be able to edit student names or artwork titles. After all lists are locked Teachers will be able to send home official paperwork for parent/guardian signatures as well as bus permission forms for the regional event. Artwork needs to finished, in the case of digital work these pieces need to be printed in the classroom. All work must be matted in the classroom with paperwork and Aldine labels affixed to the back of the work. This takes a considerable amount of time and students are expected to assist in the process of preparing their works for this contest.

February - Regional V.A.S.E.

All paperwork needs to be returned to teachers and affixed to the back of their completed, printed, and matted work. All Carver participants will travel by bus to the regional event where students will be interviewed and their work will be judged. Results will be announced during the following school week and medals will be presented to any works receiving a 4 rating. If entries are selected to advance students will be notified during this time.

March

Students advancing to State must indicate their intent to participate in the State Event which requires travel and lodging provided by Aldine ISD. Teachers will register their students for the workshops they want to attend during the State Event, this happens in two steps. First a list of available workshops will be released to teachers and students, students may only register for two workshops but must provide their teachers a list of their top five workshop selections. When registration opens these workshops will fill up very quickly, sometimes within the first half hour of open registration, so it is imperative that teachers have a list of other options should the students choice fill before they are able to be registered.

April - State V.A.S.E.

Students and teachers will travel via bus to the State Event!
